The Development of Close Social Relationships in Childhood

Abstract
The present study sought to examine how close social relationships (hereafter CSR) are developed at the ages of both preschoolers and elementary school students. The instrument used was The Picture Affective Relationship Test(PART), and this was used to assess participants`(n=218) CSR. The questions as to whether there were differences in the areas of psychological functions according to gender and age was examined. Cross tabulation analysis was administered to solve this research question. This study primarily found that in regards to the area of Receiving emotional support and Receiving reassurance for behavior, both gender groups answered that mother was the most socially close person to them. More specifically, among the respondents who answered that mothers were socially close, the percentages of girls were higher than boys. On the other hand, among the respondents who answered that fathers were socially close, the percentages of boys were higher than girls. Secondly, with regard to the area of Receiving encouragement and help, preschoolers answered that the three family members such as mothers, fathers and siblings were socially close in order, respectively. Meanwhile, elementary schoolers responded that friends and teachers were socially closer than family members. In conclusion, the examination by means of the CSR demonstrated that the types of CSR differed in terms of both gender and age.
